Looking at the current Ireland squad, it’s fair to say that the team is lacking a creative midfielder.

It is a position that various Irish bosses have struggled to fill since the retirement of Wes Hoolahan. That has had a knock-on effect on the team’s performances, with the creation of chances something that has been lacking in recent years.

For a time, some were suggesting American-born midfielder Jack McGlynn as a potential solution. The New York native qualified for the nation via his Irish father, with it being thought at one stage that he was about to commit to the Boys in Green.

McGlynn would instead make his USA debut in 2024, since earning 13 caps for his nation of birth.

MLS Star Reveals He Turned Down Multiple Ireland Call-Ups

Houston Dynamo’s Jack McGlynn looks set to feature for the USA in a World Cup on home soil next summer, but he could instead be preparing for a play-off against Czechia if he had made a different decision about his international future.

Speaking on the US Soccer Podcast last month, McGlynn admitted that he was called up to the Ireland squad on a couple of occasions, but ultimately turned down the opportunity.

I talked a lot with the Irish coaches, and the Federation for a couple years leading up to when I made my choice.

I got called into there a couple of times. But I turned them down whether it was the club turning them down or me just not being ready to make that switch.

But for me, I’ve always felt American. I know my dad is from Ireland, and most of my family is from Ireland. But I’ve always felt American, I’m a New Yorker.

So it was never really a choice for me. I’ve always wanted to play for America.

It was heavily suggested a couple of years ago that Stephen Kenny was very keen to bring the player into the Ireland squad.

Jack McGlynn has become an increasingly consistent presence in the USA squad under Mauricio Pochettino and looks set to play for the nation in a home World Cup in 2026.

While the 22-year old will have no regrets over his choice to commit to America, it would have been interesting to what he would have been capable of in a green jersey.
