The man continued his dash down the SouthWestern Motorway at “excessive speeds”.
“The car has allegedly been driven at excessive speed towards the airport, before heading north towards central Auckland.”
Police laid spikes in Mt Eden, which stopped the car, but the man jumped out and tried to steal another car while people were inside it.
“He has continued his brazen offending, attempting to carjack a passing vehicle,” Albrey said.
“Fortunately, the driver was able to reverse to safety, forcing the man to run back to his vehicle.”
He carried on to Khyber Pass before forcing a person out of their vehicle.
“Our staff were soon on scene, promptly taking this man into custody and preventing any further harm.”
Albrey said a search of the man’s vehicle found methamphetamine paraphernalia and a bat.
A 33-year-old man faces a multitude of charges, including two of assault with intent to rob, and possession of an offensive weapon.
He also faces driving charges, including driving while suspended, dangerous driving and failing to stop.
Albrey said the actions could have caused someone serious harm.
“Our staff have worked hard this morning to bring this incident to a safe conclusion and taking the man into custody.”
The accused is due to appear in the Manukau District Court today.
