Japan and Hawaii have issued evacuation orders for residents in the firing line of a tsunami that stemmed from a magnitude 8.7 earthquake in Russia.

According to NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster, tsunami warnings have been issued for at least 17 areas along the eastern Japanese coast, where 3-metre waves are expected to strike.

“Tsunami waves are approaching the coasts. Evacuate as quickly as possible. Waves can hit repeatedly. Continue to evacuate until all warnings are lifted,” the warning reads.

In Hawaii, residents living on the coast of Oahu, which is home to the state capital, Honolulu, have also been told to evacuate, according to local emergency services.
