Power has been restored to nearly 1,000 homes and properties across the Highlands and Islands and the west of Scotland that were left without electricity after strong winds swept across parts of Scotland.

The vast majority of affected households were on Mull, with some also around the Lochinver area.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) said all the Mull properties were reconnected on Friday afternoon.

SSEN said preliminary figures indicated the Western Isles saw peak wind speeds of 83mph and 75mph on Mull, with 175 lightning strikes recorded.

The cause of the Mull outage was listed as a fault on the overhead network, which the energy supplier said was a common problem.

A number of other areas were also affected, including Lairg, Invershiel and Lochalsh.
