Florida is moving the focus of its coaching search away from Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, sources familiar with the situation said.
Kiffin, who is coaching the Rebels in the Egg Bowl on Friday with a chance to lock up an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff, is also a candidate at LSU, and Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter has said an announcement on his future is expected Saturday. But Florida does not appear to be his destination.
As Florida’s search has shifted, Tulane coach Jon Sumrall and South Florida coach Alex Golesh are among the options, the sources said. The Athletic previously reported Wednesday that Florida was going through several candidates outside of Kiffin.
Sumrall, 43, is 18-7 in two seasons at Tulane and 41-11 in four seasons as an FBS coach, and has become a candidate for multiple jobs this cycle, including at Auburn. He has Tulane in contention for the American Conference title and an automatic berth in the College Football Playoff. The Green Wave (9-2, 6-1 American) host Charlotte on Saturday.
Golesh, 41, is 22-15 in three years at USF, including 8-3 this season. He led the Bulls to a Week 2 upset win over Florida, and USF was among the front-runners to win the American until it lost to Navy on Nov. 15.
Florida fired Billy Napier on Oct. 19 after a 3-4 start to the season, and the Gators moved receivers coach Billy Gonzales into the interim role. Napier was 22-23 in three-plus seasons at Florida. He appeared to have the Gators pointed in the right direction after a 2024 surge that convinced the school to stick with him for another year, but after entering this season ranked 15th in the Associated Press Top 25, the Gators lost three in a row to USF, LSU and Miami in September.
The Gators have also interviewed Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea for their head-coaching vacancy, a source briefed on the situation said, but Lea agreed to a six-year contract extension to remain at Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Kiffin, who has been noncommittal about the outside coaching interest in recent weeks, remained that way in a pregame interview with ESPN on Saturday.
“Today is about this game. … A lot on the line, our guys are focused and ready to play,” Kiffin said. “This noise thing you’re referring to, this has been going on for weeks, this isn’t new for us.”
