York police have charged the driver of a tractor-trailer after a pedestrian was struck and killed in Vaughan Thursday evening.

Officials say the fatal collision happened just before 7:30 p.m. in the area of Islington Avenue and Highway 7.

The pedestrian, who police identified as a 62-year-old male from Toronto, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say the driver of the transport truck initially left the scene, but both he and the truck were located a short time later in the area of Steinway Boulevard and Steeles Avenue in Toronto.

The suspect, who police only identified as a 65-year-old man from Whitchurch-Stouffville, has been charged with dangerous operation causing death and failure to stop causing death.

The charges have not been tested in court and the investigation is ongoing.
