Rhodri Giggs has chosen to leave the infamous rift with his older brother and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs in the past. The younger Giggs recently defended his sibling after he was omitted from the Premier League’s Hall of Fame nominees earlier this year.

United icon Giggs, who celebrates his 52nd birthday today, won a record 13 Premier League titles during his playing days and also holds the league’s all-time assist record. However, Giggs’ contributions have yet to be recognised by the Hall of Fame in the wake of several off-field scandals.

A controversy that emerged during his playing days was Ryan’s eight-year affair with his brother Rhodri’s wife, Natasha. It led to Rhodri and Natasha’s divorce and had a profound impact on the family’s dynamic. However, Rhodri has demonstrated that he still holds his brother in high regard for what he achieved in a United shirt.

In September, the Premier League unveiled a list of 15 nominees, with two later being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The nominees included seven of Giggs’ former teammates, with Gary Neville subsequently being inducted alongside ex-Chelsea winger Eden Hazard, but Rhodri hit out at the Premier League for continuing to overlook his brother.

Posting a montage of Giggs’ United highlights, Rhodri wrote on social media: “13 Premier League medals and countless goals and the record number of Premier League assists. #TheShamHallOfFame.”

Despite Ryan’s decorated footballing career, the United legend’s legacy has been somewhat overshadowed by several off-field controversies. In 2022, he stepped down as Wales manager following his arrest on suspicion of assault.

Giggs repeatedly denied the allegations and was cleared of all charges when his ex-partner Kate Greville withdrew from the trial in 2023. He had been working as Salford City’s director of football but left his post in September, reportedly with a view to returning to management.

Giggs served as interim manager and assistant coach at United before becoming Wales boss in 2018. While Ryan seeks a return to the dugout, Rhodri has insisted he holds no grudges against his older brother and even financially benefitted from their fallout.

In response to a social media user bringing up their past, Rhodri said: “Mate, it was over 14 years ago and I’ve got two kids with someone else and made s*** load of money from it.”

He added: “I buzz off it. It was 14 years ago and I made about £1million from it. Can’t be on X and not expect a little bit of shrapnel coming your way. All part of the fun.”

While some may have been surprised to see Rhodri publicly defend his brother, it is easy to understand his issue with the Premier League Hall of Fame. Giggs’ former teammates David Beckham, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Wayne Rooney, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and Andy Cole had all previously been inducted, alongside Sir Alex Ferguson.

This year, Neville was added to the 26-man group. Other nominees with United connections were Patrice Evra, Teddy Sheringham, Michael Carrick, Nemanja Vidic, Edwin van der Sar and Michael Owen.

Giggs made 963 appearances as a one-club man, scoring 168 goals. He won multiple major honours across his 24-year career, including 13 league titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.
