Wales v Springboks preview
Are Wales starting to turn a corner after a couple of disastrous seasons? This year’s opening Autumn International against Argentina was a humbling defeat, but they eventually got the result they needed against Japan. And, although the final 26-52 scoreline suggests otherwise, they were more competitive against the All Blacks than most expected. New head coach Steve Tandy will certainly believe the nation has reasons for optimism ahead of next year’s Six Nations.
Nonetheless, he could possibly do without this final match of the Quilter Nations Series. The fact it falls outside World Rugby’s official international window means that players based in England and France are ineligible for selection, removing the likes of Louis Rees-Zammit, Tomos Williams, Max Llewellyn, Dafydd Jenkins and Adam Beard from the equation. Last weekend’s hat-trick hero Tom Rogers is also unavailable through injury (joining the talismanic Jac Morgan in the treatment room), meaning that this week’s team has a rather makeshift feel.
The Springboks, meanwhile, arrive in Cardiff in imperious form, having won all their matches this autumn, including humbling victories over both France and Ireland. While they head into this match as overwhelming favourites, head coach Rassie Erasmus hasn’t gone easy on the hosts with his selection. Proving once again that no side in world rugby has so much strength in depth, this revamped matchday-23 is packed with power, ability and experience. And with an ominous 7-1 split on the South Africa bench, this could be a very long afternoon for the men in red.
