Leeds United produced an unbelievable second half performance that deserved a result but Manchester City’s stoppage time goal through Phil Foden would break visiting hearts.
The hosts had been two goals ahead by half time with Foden and Josko Gvardiol finding the net inside 25 minutes. However, a change of system at half-time by Daniel Farke saw Leeds draw level.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the net four minutes after the break before he won a penalty for Lukas Nmecha to fire hom from the rebound on 68 minutes.
However, Foden’s stoppage time effort left Pep Guardiola elated and Leeds crestfallen. Here are how the United players rated.
Lucas Perri – Made a terrific save from a rasping Foden effort before making a has of the punch from the subsequent corner. Made a good stop in the second half when Jeremy Doku crossed and down low in the 90th miniue. 7
Jayden Bogle – Was undone with the angled through-ball more than once in the first half but excelled as the wing back. 8
Joe Rodon – Was often seen scampering back when the through-ball in the first half but came into his own in the second, dominating the City attack – and Erling Haaland. 8
Pascal Strujik – Got his head to some important headers although was slow when quicker passes were needed. Looked more assured with two centre-half partners. Made a last-gasp sliding sliced clearance to prevent City going ahead on 75 minutes. 8
James Justin – Jumped out too far for the opener but made some vital blocks in the first half. Stablisied in the second period before coming off with an injury. 7
Ao Tanaka – A few loose passes but also some clever ones too. Showed good feet at times in the second half. 7
Ethan Ampadu – Was commanding his side from the middle and was a composed figure throughout the second half. 7
Ilia Gruev – Kept running and held his position cleverly. Put in a decent corner or two. 7
Daniel James – Managed to power down the right a few times but his cut-backs produced little as City got bodies back. 6
Lukas Nmecha – Had a difficult task as the lone striker and looked much better with Calvert-Lewin by his side. Kept running, giving everything and showing intelligence at times. Cool on the rebound. 9
Willy Gnonto – Was tasked with covering back on the left, but the gap between him and Justin was too open. Managed to get into the final third without much fruit. 4
