The 500m final produced a good dollop of drama with two skaters crashing out and van ’t Wout losing his footing to concede his lead.

The initial winner, Steven Dubois of Canada, was penalised for contact with Pietro Sighel, which saw Andrew Heo claim the gold medal with a time of 42.012 seconds.

Dandjinou was promoted to runner-up, with Felix Pigeon finishing third on the podium.

The 25-year-old Sarault underlined her dominance in the women’s 1000m this season by capturing her third victory from four starts in the event.

Sarault made her move with less than five laps to go, overtaking Dutch skater Xandra Velzeboer.

The Canadian looked firmly in control at the front of the five-woman race to take the top spot in a time of 1:27.701. Corinne Stoddard of the United States followed in second place in 1:27.752, with Belgium’s Hanne Desmet finishing third in 1:27.897.

Sarault leads Stoddard by 100 points in the overall rankings with two more individual events to come on Sunday.
