West Coast have confirmed they will seek draft assistance from the AFL at the end of the 2025 season.

Eagles chief executive Don Pyke on Wednesday morning spoke to the “unfortunate” situation his club has found themselves in, amid their worst-ever season record of one win and a whopping 18 losses.

“(With) the unfortunate situation we find ourselves in, looking at our numbers — whether it be games won, quarters won, percentage over the last five years — we find ourselves right in the position where if you apply it across clubs who have recently received assistance… we’re well and truly in the window for that,” Pyke told on SEN.

“We’ll have those discussions and we’ll proceed with some sort of request … as disappointing as it is, we are where we are. With the draft as compromised as it’s been, we feel like we can benefit from some assistance to get ourselves out of where we’ve been.”

North Melbourne are the most recent club to have received compensation from the AFL in the form of draft capital back in 2023. The Kangaroos were given one end-of-first-round pick in the 2023 National Draft, before receiving two further end-of-first-round selections last year.

The club were also given two additional rookie list spots in 2024.

“We’ll pick it up with the AFL as to what we think is appropriate (compensation) … I think North Melbourne is the most recent club who got some back-end of the first round picks. But those picks aren’t 19 and 20 any more, they’re 30 and 31, history would say,” Pyke continued.

“I’m also mindful of people saying: ‘Well, West Coast got into this problem, so they should just work their way out of it’. But this is the essence of equalisation; the equalisation across the comp is designed to allow clubs to not spend a long period of time either at the top or at the bottom.

“I think we’d be not doing our duty if we didn’t ask the question: ‘How do we get any assistance we can?’”
