Millions of Australians will get access to free public transport every weekend for the next two months from today. The offer is being made available to all Victorians to celebrate the opening of the Metro Tunnel in Melbourne.
Those travelling throughout the state, including Melbourne trains, will be able to do so for free on the weekends from November 30 until February 1.
Passengers won’t need a ticket or a myki to travel for free, and ticket barriers are set to remain open. While some regional services will still require a reservation to manage seating capacity, it will be at no cost.
Premier Jacinta Allan said last month the offer is to thank Victorians for enduring disruptions caused by the build of the tunnel over the past eight years.
“This is our way of saying thanks to everyone for their patience while we built the Metro Tunnel, and to celebrate this huge moment in the history of our state,” she said.
“The Metro Tunnel will cut congestion and get you to work, uni and home sooner — and it opens in early December.”
