A Christchurch school was given rancid, mouldy meals as part of the Government’s school lunch programme on Monday.
Haeata Community Campus, which covers from Year 1 to 13, said it recalled all of the lunches, but some had already been eaten by students.
It is asking parents to watch for symptoms of food poisoning such as vomiting and diarrhoea, and says more serious symptoms could include bloody diarrhoea, fevers and dehydration.
Principal Peggy Burrows said they have had problems with the lunches before but nothing as catastrophic as this.
She said the lunches had already been given out when a staff member noticed the meal of mince and potatoes was rancid and covered in mould.
Staff then checked several other meals and found they were also off.
The meal provider, Compass Group, came and gathered up the meals.
Compass Group has been approached for comment.
