A logging truck driver has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after the vehicle went off the road north of Balclutha.
The crash occurred in the Stony Creek area just after 11am today.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman confirmed crews had extricated one person who had been ‘‘heavily trapped inside a logging truck’’, at 1.45pm.
Four fire trucks, two support vehicles and an area commander had since left the scene.
A Hato Hone St John spokeswoman said they responded with one ambulance, one operations manager, one rapid response unit and one helicopter.
The driver was being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.
A police spokeswoman said the truck had gone off Coe Rd, between Paterson Rd and Hillend Rd.
She confirmed the driver had been removed from the truck and was being transported to hospital.
The truck could be seen lying on its side down a bank.
Logs were strewn around the area and the truck appeared to have been heading towards State Highway 1.
Police also attended.
The Clutha District Council said in a Facebook post just after 4pm that Coe Rd would remain closed overnight.
It was expected to reopen about noon once the truck had been retrieved.
