Winter is officially upon us but it may not feel like that
Mild and very wet week ahead
It’s official. Winter is here! In meteorological terms, at least, as the beginning of December marks the technical start of the winter season but it may not feel like that.
There won’t be a snowman built in Ireland for at least a couple of weeks as a snow update has been issued by an Irish weather expert who has revealed that temperatures are set to remain unseasonably mild for the beginning of the month.
Alan O’Reilly, who mans the ever-popular @CarlowWeather account on X, has suggested that no snow or significantly cooler temperatures are expected for the first 10 days of December.
“First day of winter today and it’s a mild start with no sign of any real significant cold or snow for at least next 10 days,” he posted.
Low pressure is set to dominate through the first week of the last month of the year, which will bring unsettled conditions and mean plenty of rain for much of the country over the coming days.
Today, Monday December 1, will see widespread rain in the south and east but the west and north will enjoy drier conditions though there will be isolated showers. Temperatures will range between 7C and 11C today but that may drop down to lows of -1C overnight, with a touch of frost possible.
Tomorrow then will be a bright, breezy and cool day with sunny spells and some showers. The west will face most of the showers as the east experiences some sunny spells. Temperatures will range between 5C and 10C.
Wednesday will be a similar day, with scattered showers mainly affecting western Atlantic counties. The east will see sunny spells but cloud will spread there into the afternoon, joined by rain and drizzle. Temperatures will remain mild for this time of year, with Met Eireann expecting them to range between 7C to 11C.
