A fatal crash has closed the westbound lanes of Highway 401 through Ayr on Wednesday morning, and Oxford County OPP say the driver responsible failed to remain at the scene.
It was around 7:18 a.m. on Wednesday when Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a crash on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near Oxford Road 3.
OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk provided insight into the investigation, saying the victim was a tow truck driver who had stopped to help a stranded motorist on the side of the road. That tow operator was struck and killed by a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.
“To all family members and friends that are affect by this tragedy, I just want to extend my deepest and sincerest condolences,” said Sanchuk.
The westbound lanes of Highway 401 have been closed from Cedar Creek Road through to Oxford Road 29 near Drumbo. Traffic stuck in the closure is slowly being taken off the highway through an emergency detour route.
Oxford OPP have asked drivers to avoid the area, as Sanchuk warned that the closure could be in place for six to eight hours.
Any drivers that may have been heading through the area of Oxford Road 3 around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, including those with dash camera footage, are encouraged to contact Oxford County OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
