Trafford has rejoined Manchester City in a deal which Burnley say is a record transfer
for a British goalkeeper. Sources at City have indicated the deal is worth an
initial £27m plus add-ons, while Burnley have briefed that the figure is £31m
plus add-ons.
The record
was last set in 2017 when Jordan Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland for £25m,
with an additional £5m due in add-ons. Given Pickford has made over 300
appearances for the Toffees, also winning 76 England caps, it is safe to assume
most, if not all, of his performance-related payments have been triggered.
Only four
Premier League keepers have cost more than Pickford and Trafford. Chelsea paid
£71.6m to activate Kepa Arrizabalaga’s release clause at Athletic Club in 2018,
which remains a world record. However, the Spaniard struggled to justify that
fee and eventually moved to Arsenal this summer for just £5m.
Alisson
also arrived for big money in the summer of 2018, moving to Liverpool from Roma
for an initial £56m, but has proved an outstanding long-term investment. The Brazilian’s
success at Anfield, where he has won six major honours, means add-ons will have
taken his final fee to almost £67m.
Andre Onana
has endured mixed fortunes since leaving Inter for Manchester United two years
ago for an initial £43.8m. Meanwhile, Trafford’s new City team-mate Ederson is
the league’s fourth most expensive goalkeeper, having cost £34.7m when he
joined from Benfica eight years ago.
