Quentin Tarantino, one of the most acclaimed directors of the time, put forth some controversial opinions on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, including his backlash-inducing take on Paul Dano and his distaste for Bottle Rocket star Owen Wilson. However, the Pulp Fiction director did put one Owen Wilson starrer as his 10th favorite movie of the 21st century.
Quentin Tarantino says he ‘can’t stand’ Owen Wilson even though he enjoyed Midnight in Paris
Quentin Tarantino’s appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast saw a massive online backlash for his comments about Paul Dano in There Will Be Blood. But Dano was not the only actor that the Kill Bill director criticized. He also had some harsh words reserved for Owen Wilson.
“I really can’t stand Owen Wilson,” the veteran director said, “I mean, I can’t stand him.” This is despite Tarantino listing Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris as his 10th favorite movie of the 21st century.
He elaborated, “I spent the first time watching the movie loving it and hating him,…The second time I watched the movie, I was like, ‘Ah, okay, don’t be such a prick. He’s not so bad. He’s not so bad.’ And then the third time I watched it, I found myself watching him.”
Wilson or his representatives have not responded to the comments as of yet. Tarantino’s take on Wilson is not as harsh as his comments about Paul Dano, which seem to have stolen the spotlight in this instance.
Quentin Tarantino also offered his analysis of Midnight in Paris’s director, Woody Allen, and how he made one film per year for most of his career. “Well, if you put them under a microscope, you can kinda see how he does it. One, he’s not really writing movies, he’s writing short stories that he expands to feature length,” Tarantino said.
He added about prioritizing quality, “If he were to take one of these and spend a year writing it and go through draft two, three, four, just to see what would happen, God knows what they would be! But he wouldn’t make as many movies, and I don’t think that interests him. I think he likes writing — get it done, and move on to the next one.”
