In a report filed to Congress on Dec. 3, the acting Pentagon inspector general concluded that sensitive messages Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sent in a group Signal chat months prior risked putting US troops in danger, a person familiar with the matter said.

In March, the editor of the Atlantic magazine revealed that then-national security adviser Michael Waltz had inadvertently included him in a group texting thread with Hegseth and other top officials in President Donald Trump’s administration about a US military operation in Yemen. The group discussed highly sensitive matters on Signal, a commercial messaging app that is off-limits for US officials to exchange sensitive or classified information, despite its reputation for enhanced security.
