Part of southern Ontario is under a snow squall watch with very poor conditions possible.

Environment Canada has issued an orange weather alert for much of the Bruce Peninsula.

The weather agency said “persistent” snow squalls are expected to develop.

“Under the snow squall bands, visibility will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate,” the alert said.

Total snowfall amounts of 20 to 40 cm are possible.

It’s expected to impact the region Friday into Saturday.

“The snow squalls that develop are expected to impact the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula from north of Lion’s Head to Tobermory,” Environment Canada said.

“The lake effect snow will be accompanied by southwesterly winds gusting 40 to 60 km/h. As a result, blowing snow will further reduce visibility. Conditions are expected to improve Saturday evening.”

Further north, various snow-related weather alerts are also in effect.

Parry Sound, for example, is under a yellow snow squall watch.

There, 15 to 25 cm is possible, though Environment Canada said there is uncertainty as to where exactly the bands could impact, so accumulation “may be quite variable.”
