After much anticipation, the Bay Area finally found out what countries it’s playing host to for the 2026 World Cup — and safe to say, it’s a major letdown.

The World Cup’s finalized schedule was unveiled on Saturday, revealing Switzerland, Paraguay, Qatar, Austria, Jordan, Algeria, and Australia as guarantees to play group stage matches at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara starting on June 13.

Friday’s live draw that placed countries in their respective World Cup groups ended up just being a major tease for Bay Area soccer fans hoping to witness one of the tournament’s top attractions in Lionel Messi and Argentina, who wound up in Group J, which has some games scheduled for the Bay Area, but were sent by FIFA to play their group stage match in Kansas City instead.

Of the countries slated to play in Santa Clara, none is in the top 15 of FIFA’s latest world rankings. Switzerland has the highest ranking at No. 17. Austria follows (24), then Australia (26), Algeria (35), Paraguay (39), Qatar (51), and finally Jordan (66). Argentina is ranked second overall.

The schedule reveal also included match times for Levi’s Stadium, with the first Bay Area match notably set for a 12 p.m. local time start between Switzerland and Qatar. The schedule is as follows:

June 13: Switzerland vs. Qatar at 12 p.m. local (Group B)

June 15: Austria vs. Jordan at 9 p.m. local (Group J)

June 18: Paraguay vs. Euro qualifier at 9 p.m. local (Group D)

June 22: Algeria vs. Jordan at 8 p.m. local (Group J)

June 25: Paraguay vs. Australia at 7 p.m. local (Group D)

As 49ers fans and anyone who’s attended a daytime event at Levi’s Stadium knows, Switzerland-Qatar is likely to be a rough watch for fans seated on the dreaded east side of the stadium, who will presumably be baking in the summer sun of Santa Clara while taking in the World Cup.

Despite the bad luck of the draw for the Bay Area, the excitement over the region’s first World Cup matches since 1994 is sure to build as the summer draws near. And the Bay Area can hold out hope for its Round of 32 match in Santa Clara that could include the United States (No. 14 in FIFA’s world rankings), who are in a prime position to win their group and advance past Australia and Paraguay.
