2025 has been a year of frustration for Lamont Roach in the boxing ring.
Twice, he — and many others — felt that he deserved the nod over his opponent in 12-round fights, and both times he was denied the decision.

Roach and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz fought to a majority draw (111-115, 113-113, 113-113) in their WBC interim super lightweight title fight Saturday night at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
It marked Roach’s second straight majority draw in 2025. The former WBA super featherweight champion and Gervonta “Tank” Davis couldn’t be split after 12 rounds in New York this past March in an infamous fight that included Davis’ knee no-call controversy.
“All I want is a fair shake, man — that’s it,” Roach said after Saturday’s fight. “I think I pulled that fight out, a close victory. This is some bulls***, man. I clearly thought I won.”
Cruz is also an ex-Davis opponent, losing a competitive unanimous decision to the WBA lightweight champion in December 2021.

Cruz had a strong start to the contest, largely because Roach chose to hold his ground and trade with the Mexican at close range. The former WBA super lightweight champion floored Roach with a left hook in the final minute of Round 3.
In the mid-rounds, Roach — realizing he was behind — made an adjustment. He decided to hold his feet less and move more on the back foot against Cruz. It was the strategy that guided Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela to a win and allowed Giovanni Cabrera to have ample success against Cruz — and it should’ve been Roach’s game plan from the opening bell. When Roach employed it, it paid dividends and allowed him to have a strong spell of rounds.
Cruz utilized dirty tactics during the fight. He led with the head, punched low, and was deducted a point in Round 7 for kidney punches.

Heading into the championship rounds, Roach appeared to be on his way to a decision victory, but a strong finish from Cruz prevented that from being the case. Roach was getting the better of the penultimate frame until Cruz caught Roach, and Roach unwisely decided to exchange with the Mexican, allowing Cruz the opportunity to connect with some eye-catching shots and sway the judges in his favor.
All three judges awarded Cruz, who had heavy support from the 10,000-strong crowd, the first three rounds and the 12th round. Two judges gave Cruz the eleventh, as well.
In the night’s co-feature, WBC super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster dominated the WBC featherweight champion Stephen Fulton for a one-sided unanimous decision (119-109, 118-110, 117-111) win in their WBC interim lightweight title fight.

Six minutes to go, and Roach seems to be in control. Cruz will get the home favoritism on the scorecards, though, because the fight is in San Antonio, and Cruz has the crowd support, so Roach will need to finish strong as well to be sure of victory. The eleventh has been much slower. Roach is dominating on the back foot with left hands. Cruz’s pressure is forced and easy to deal with for Roach at this point. There’s no injection of pace into Cruz’s work. Although a nice body shot landed for Cruz — and now he CATCHES Roach, and Cruz will land a flurry. The pair trade to end the penultimate stanza. Cruz with the big moment he needed. Bad idea for Roach to trade with Cruz.

Former Gervonta Davis opponents, Isaac Cruz and Lamont Roach, clash for Cruz’s WBC interim super lightweight title in the night’s 12-round main event.
Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) is the current WBA super featherweight champion — although he will lose that title the second he enters the ring on Saturday. Roach claimed his belt with a split decision win over Hector Luis Garcia in November 2023. He moved up to challenge Davis for his WBA lightweight crown in March, where he was forced to settle for a majority decision draw amid significant controversy.
Mexico’s Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) also extended Davis the 12-round distance, losing a close decision in December 2021. Cruz stopped Rolando “Rolly” Romero, the current WBA welterweight champion, to win the WBA super lightweight title in March 2024, but then lost the belt to Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela in his next fight. Cruz has picked up two wins since that defeat and now fights for a third time in 2025.

More of the same in the 11th round. Fulton struggles to break the gap and eats straight punches from the champ. Fulton doesn’t have the style to fight Foster on the inside as Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez did. Fulton’s advantages are largely negated by Foster’s style.
