Met Éireann has warned of the potential for localised flooding and difficult travel conditions as it issued a rain warning for a number of counties in the south of the country.

The Status Yellow rain warning for counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Waterford comes into effect at 9pm tonight and will remain in place until tomorrow morning.

The forecaster said heavy rain will fall on “already saturated ground” and warned of localised flooding and difficult travel conditions, adding that outdoor events may be impacted.

Tomorrow, the entire country will be under a Status Yellow wind warning, with Met Éireann forecasting “very strong and gusty southerly winds with gales possible near coasts”.

The warning will come into place at 3am and will remain in place until 9pm tomorrow.

It also said that there is an increased flood risk in coastal areas due to coincide with “very high spring tides”.

The weather may lead to difficult travel conditions and flooding of low-lying coastal areas with wave overtopping.

Met Éireann also said debris and loose objects may be displaced and outdoor events may be impacted.
