At an hour when kids across Ireland were being put to bed after the Late Late Toy Show – one woman bringing her kids home in Co Clare was stopped by Gardai after she came around a corner on the wrong side of the road.
The woman, who was already a disqualified driver, had two young children in the back. She was tested at the roadside by Gardai who suspected she was impaired and she tested positive for cocaine.
Gardai across Munster are mounting stops, roadblocks and patrols over the Christmas and New Year – specifically targeting drivers under the influence. The use of roadside test ‘wipes’ now give gardai the ability to easily and instantly test for drug use, alongside breathalyser tests for alcohol.
Gardai from the Road Policing Unit seized the car driven erratically by the woman with two kids in the back in Ennis late on Friday night. She is now facing a court date.
Posting to social media, Gardai said: “Last Friday night while some families were heading to bed following the Toy Show, our Roads Polcing unit stopped this car in Ennis, after it went around a corner on the wrong side of the road.
The driver had two of her children in the car with her, a few checks on our mobility system showed she was disqualified and a positive drug wipe for cocaine, probably showed the reason why her driving caught our eye.”
The driver was arrested, and her car seized. Over the Christmas period, we will be continuing to target intoxicated drivers on the road, with a hope that it will prevent any more empty seats at the Christmas dinner table this year”.
