The woman said she was detained after asking the agents what they were doing.
MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis woman said she spent four hours shackled in a jail cell Tuesday after being detained by ICE agents.Â
Sue Tincher said she heard ICE was conducting an operation in her neighborhood around 6:30 in the morning. She said she was an observer and wanted to find out what was going on. When she asked what the agents were doing, she said she was told to stand back. She didn’t, and was detained.
Last week, the Department of Homeland Security began what they called “Operation Metro Surge.” Twelve people were taken into custody during the operation, DHS said. There have been continued reports since then of ICE in the Twin Cities, including in Burnsville, where family members told KARE 11 ICE detained four people over the weekend.Â
ICE posted on social media Tuesday a video showing of multiple arrests, with the caption “Minnesota’s weather is cloudy with a 100% chance of ICE.”Â
The Northside Residents Redevelopment Council says three others were detained in the raid at which Tincher was detained. ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have not commented publicly on this incident.
Tincher said when she was detained, she was pushed down into the snow and put into an unmarked vehicle as she yelled for help. She said she was taken to the Whipple Federal Building and held for four hours.Â
Her husband, Jim Tincher, told media he didn’t know where they took his wife. He said he called city councilors, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Sen. Tina Smith for help. He said he never found out where she was until she called him.Â
“I knew she would come back, a lot of families don’t know what,” Jim Tincher said.Â
When asked if she would continue being an ICE observer, Sue Tincher said yes.Â
“I see what is happening to our neighborhoods and I see what this is doing to families, and I want to keep the focus on those folks that don’t have the resources that I do,” she said.Â
