Torrential rains fueled by a strong low-pressure system have inundated thousands of tents sheltering displaced Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, aid officials and local authorities reported on Wednesday, Dec. 10, warning of an imminent humanitarian disaster, Anadolu reports.

The heavy downpours, which began at dawn, submerged numerous tents in makeshift camps, with water levels rising above 40 centimeters in some areas.

The flooding has severely damaged the limited shelter available to hundreds of thousands of displaced families, ruining personal belongings and leaving many exposed to harsh, cold conditions.

In a statement, Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmoud Basal issued a grave warning, stating that the situation could lead to drowning incidents and a visible catastrophe unless urgent international action is taken. He emphasized that the severity of the suffering in Gaza far outstrips the level of assistance provided so far and called for immediate global intervention.

The Government Media Office in Gaza had previously warned on Tuesday about the approaching low-pressure system, which is expected to last until Friday evening.

According to its earlier data, approximately 300,000 tents and prefabricated housing units are urgently needed to meet the most basic shelter needs in Gaza, following widespread destruction of infrastructure during the war.

The United Nations has estimated that the cost of rebuilding Gaza’s devastated infrastructure could reach around $70 billion.
