The roof of a Welsh leisure centre has blown off during strong winds caused by Storm Bram. Emergency services were called to Holyhead Leisure Centre on Anglesey on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at around 3pm, while staff and visitors were inside. Everyone was safely evacuated from the premises, with no reported injuries.

John Davies, a Trearddur Bay resident who operates JDMEDIAFILM, happened upon the scene while returning from a supermarket trip in Holyhead. He noticed the roof had been blown off.

He told North Wales Live: “I couldn’t believe it, it must have happened in the 10 minutes I was at the shop.

“The roof was scattered across the car park and fragments of it were strewn across the road. At that point, there were no emergency services present, but they soon arrived.” Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.

Christian Branch, Anglesey Council’s head of regulation and economic development, said: “Unfortunately, Holyhead Leisure Centre will be closed for the time being after a section of its roof was damaged by Storm Bram.

“The full extent of the damage will be assessed when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank the North Wales Fire Service for its assistance.

“We hope to issue further updates as soon as possible.”

Much of Wales has seen torrential rain and strong winds on Monday with Met Office warnings in place across the country at various times.

Parts of south Wales were battered by Storm Bram, including Pontypridd and Cardiff, with the River Taff bursting its banks.

As of Tuesday evening, no weather warnings have been issued for Wednesday that affect Wales. There are, however, amber and yellow warnings for wind across Scotland.
