As an area for further work under Section 2, ‘What remains to be accomplished?’, ECDC added the exploration of use cases for novel surveillance tools, data sources (such as electronic health records and large-scale data) and methods through pilots with a subset of countries before broader implementation. A community of practice will be established to coordinate this action and foster experience sharing and innovation both at ECDC and across the EU/EEA.
Several timelines were updated to reflect delays and changes in the sequence of activities. The only entire item removed was former Action 2.3, the establishment of an EU/EEA sentinel hospital system for integrated surveillance of severe cases across several infectious diseases, because its objectives will be achieved much more efficiently through surveillance based on data from electronic health records (as part of Action 2.4).
