The Toronto Zoo says it has put down a popular, male lion after months of veterinary care.

Fintan, “a majestic male white lion easily recognizable by his luscious mane,” had lived at the zoo for 13 years, according to a Toronto Zoo Instagram post Friday. The lion had been under veterinary care for months, the zoo said, and was experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting and decreased appetite.

“Despite the continuous efforts of his dedicated Veterinary and Wildlife Care teams — who have cared for him with exceptional skill, compassion, and love since his arrival — he recently worsened and the decision was made this morning to say goodbye to Fintan,” the zoo said in its post.

Fintan came to the zoo alongside two female lions in 2012, the zoo said. The name means “little fair one,” according to the zoo, which said Fintan was a favourite among visitors and workers.

“Fintan has touched the hearts of so many — our guests, members, staff, and volunteers — with his majestic presence and calm spirit,” the zoo’s post said. “He was the true King of the African Savanna here and his presence will be deeply missed.”

A full post-mortem examination will be conducted at a later date, the zoo said.
