PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Police are currently responding to an active shooter situation at Brown University.
ABC 6 News obtained a text alert sent to members of the campus community alerting them of an active shooter and urging them to lock doors and stay hidden.
A later alert said that one suspect was in custody but to still remain sheltered.
The incident is occurring near Thayer Street.
Providence police said that the public should avoid the area of Hope Street near the university.
There is currently heavy Providence Police and Fire presence on Hope Street near Brown University. Please exercise caution and avoid this area until further notice.
