A new era has begun for the Vancouver Canucks.
The team practiced for the first time on Saturday in New Jersey following the trade of their captain, Quinn Hughes.
It was a day when a lot was going on for the Canucks, outside of the fact that Hughes was no longer with the team.
With the Canucks now captainless, and Elias Pettersson still missing in action, the team needed to add at least one more alternate captain ahead of their game against the New Jersey Devils on Sunday.
Adam Foote mentioned on Saturday that, for the first time in his NHL career, Filip Hronek will wear an “A” for Vancouver.
Right now, Petterson, Brock Boeser and Tyler Myers are the Canucks alternate captains.
Perhaps the announcement shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Foote singled out Hronek last week as someone who had really stepped up as a leader in the Canucks locker room.
“I don’t want to name names, but I mean, the first guy that comes to my mind is a guy like Fil,” Foote said after practice on Thursday, Dec. 4.
“Huge growth in his maturity. It doesn’t matter the game, if we’re down 10 guys or five, or if our PK was struggling… Fil has been there, solid as a leader for, not just Quinn, but the team.”
The 28-year-old will assuredly be asked to step up into a bigger role for the Canucks now that Hughes is in Minnesota.
At practice on Saturday, the Canucks also welcomed all three newcomers to the team.

The team also revealed their jersey numbers.
Zeevn Buium will wear No. 24 for the Canucks. He previously donned No. 8 for the Wild, which is being used in Vancouver by Conor Garland.
Marco Rossi will wear No. 93 for the Canucks. He’s the first player in team history to ever wear that number. Rossi previously had No. 23 for Minnesota.
Liam Öhgren will don No. 92 for the Canucks, becoming the second player to wear that jersey in team history, after Vasily Podkolzin. He previously wore No. 28 with the Wild.
All three players practiced with the Canucks on Saturday.
#Canucks took a drill with the following lineup at practice in Newark Saturday, but wingers cycled a bit.

According to The Athletic’s Thomas Drance, forward Elias Pettersson skated as an extra but will not play on Sunday. Nils Höglander was under the weather but is expected to be fine for tomorrow’s game.
Although Marco Rossi skated on the top line, he hasn’t been formally cleared to play yet. The Wild put him on injured reserve after he suffered a lower-body injury. Rossi last played on Nov. 11.
