New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has hailed as a hero a man who tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the Bondi Beach attack today.
The unarmed bystander lunged at the armed attacker and wrestled the weapon from his hands, forcing the gunman to flee.
Local media in Australia have reported the man is a 43-year-old shopkeeper named Ahmed al Ahmed.
Mr Minns said he was “a genuine hero”.
He added that he had no doubt there were many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery.
