The M6 motorway was closed after a motorist drove the wrong way down the carriageway while being pursued, police said.
The Lancashire force said a Seat Ibiza was being driven “erratically” on the southbound M6 near Lancaster, between junctions J33 and J32 on Saturday.
Police said the driver did not to stop, performed a U-turn and drove north on the southside carriageway.
A 26-year-old man, of Ashford, in Kent, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after police performed a “tactical stop”. The M6 was closed for several hours.
