A man in his 60s was found on Sunday morning with stab wounds near the ByWard Market, according to the Ottawa Police Service.

The man was found at 8:50 a.m. in critical condition on Besserer Street, a spokesperson told CBC.

An Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesperson confirmed that paramedics had responded to the scene of a stabbing near the corner of Cumberland Street and Besserer Street.

Paramedics assessed, treated and transported the man to a trauma centre, they said, describing him as in a “very serious situation.”

Chris Beeston had returned home from walking his dog when he heard “cries for help” outside his building.

“The gentleman was laying on the ground. There was a tremendous amount of blood loss,” he said. “We could see it from [the ninth floor], which was shocking.”

Photos that Beeston took of the scene show blood splattered in the snow of a parking lot, police investigating a white car, and that car later being towed away.

The man’s condition was later upgraded to stable, according to police.

Beeston noted that he was impressed with the first responders’ quick work.

“The police acting so fast, they saved the guy — there was a lot of blood,” Beeston said. “And the team worked very hard to make sure this man was going to live.”

Police were still at the scene around 11:40 a.m. on Sunday. An online post indicated that officers would be canvassing for witnesses.

The investigation is ongoing and police have asked anyone with information to contact them at 613-236-1222, extension 5166.
