There is no estimate for when the roadway will fully reopen.
OLYMPIA, Wash. — One lane of Interstate 5 near U.S. 101 in the Olympia area remains closed hours after a collision involving three semi-trucks and a car, officials say.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) first posted about the collision just after 5 a.m. Monday morning. All traffic is being diverted to Deschutes Parkway, WSDOT said. All lanes were initially blocked.
WSDOT reopened most of the lanes by 9 a.m., but traffic remained backed up for miles over much of the morning commute.
Washington State Patrol (WSP) Trooper Kameron Watts posted on X that troopers were responding to a “3 semi/1 car-barrier collision,” and that the left lane of the southbound side of I-5 was also blocked due to a barrier being displaced.
WSP said in an update at 5:38 a.m. that injuries are minor. However, one of the involved semi-trucks jackknifed, which will complicate the clearing of the roadway.
“An alternative route to consider is using the Trosper exit to bypass the collision then re-enter NB I-5 from Capitol Blvd or 14th Ave,” said Trooper Watts in his X post.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
