Firefighters on aerial appliances are hosing down the remains of a large industrial building now gutted and left as a shell, in the south Auckland suburb of Wiri.
Earlier on Tuesday, large plumes of dark grey smoke could be seen from several kilometres away.
Police closed Roscommon Road and were directing traffic back on to the motorway.
They are encouraging motorists to use alternative routes.
No one from Fire and Emergency was available to comment but RNZ understands crews from seven stations attended.
