Earlier this year, the Government announced the National Adaptation Framework, its long-term, strategic approach to help New Zealand prepare for, and respond to, the impacts of climate change.
A key action is developing a National Flood Map to bring together local, regional and national-scale data in a trusted source of flood risk information for the whole country.
The first-generation map is expected to be publicly released in 2027.
We’ve started work to develop the map by asking councils across New Zealand to share information with us about their current flood maps, models and data.
To move to the next stage, we are seeking proposals from suppliers experienced in flood modelling and geospatial data to help us develop an approach to integrate information from councils into a single dataset.
We have issued a Request for Proposal to develop a robust methodology to bring together local fluvial (river), pluvial (rainfall), and coastal flood modelling.
This will produce integrated data which can then be combined with national-scale flood model outputs and other natural hazard datasets in the next stage of the project.
The request is open until Thursday, 5 February 2026.
