The Washington Capitals’ offer to the Vancouver Canucks for now-former captain Quinn Hughes has been revealed and it included some very interesting pieces.

“We would like to thank Quinn for his time with the Vancouver Canucks. Quinn is a great person, a great player, and one of the greatest Canucks of all time. With the circumstances surrounding JT and now Quinn, we are fortunate to acquire these very good young players from Minnesota. They will be a key part of the rebuild that we are currently in, giving us a bright future moving forward. The hockey club will continue to build with talented young players using that as a blueprint to become a contender sooner rather than later.” Jim Rutherford said.

Quinn Hughes being traded by the Canucks seemed inevitable, whether it was during the 2025-26 season or in the summer, as it was unlikely he was going to stick around with the club long-term.

Teams began calling the Vancouver Canucks to inquire about the asking price for Quinn Hughes and while some balked, others decided to put in a formal offer for the former Norris Trophy winner including the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals in addition to the eventual winner of the sweepstakes, Minnesota.

Washington Capitals’ offer to Vancouver Canucks for Quinn Hughes revealed

In a social media post on Friday night, Jimmy Murphy of RG Media shared that the Washington Capitals put together a package that included centerman Connor McMichal, defensive prospect Cole Hutson, another prospect, as well as two first round picks in exchange for Quinn Hughes.

The offer was ultimately shot down by Patrik Allvin and Jim Rutherford, with Murphy reporting that the Vancouver Canucks wanted 2023 eighth overall pick Ryan Leonard included in the deal, but Washington said no.

“Hearing the #AllCaps and #Canucks discussed McMichael, Hutson, a prospect, and two firsts for Hughes, but Canucks, IMHO, got a better haul from #mnwild.” Murphy said.

He added, “Should also note, the Caps gave a hard NO on Ryan Leonard to Canucks!”

The package Washington came forward with was pretty solid to say the least and would’ve given the Vancouver Canucks the pieces they wanted as they undergo a retool/rebuild, however, Rutherford and Allvin clearly liked what Minnesota had to offer better than the Capitals, with Marco Rossi and Zeev Buium being two key pieces for the future of the organization.
