Egypt has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly’s overwhelming adoption of two resolutions reaffirming the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The first resolution addresses the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people over the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, while the second affirms the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Egypt stated that the adoption of the two resolutions reflects the growing international consensus on the justice of the Palestinian cause and the necessity of upholding the rules and principles of international law.
In its statement, Egypt emphasized that the resolutions are grounded in well-established legal foundations, foremost among them the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to the occupied Palestinian territory. The resolutions also rely on the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024, which confirmed the illegality of the continued Israeli occupation and related policies and practices, including settlement activities, the construction of the separation wall, and the unlawful exploitation of Palestinian natural resources.
Egypt underscored that the permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people over their land and natural resources, as well as their inherent right to self-determination, constitute non-derogable rights. It firmly rejected any practices that undermine or infringe upon these rights, renewing its call to halt the exploitation of Palestinian resources and to hold Israel legally accountable, including providing compensation for damages resulting from such practices and the severe harm inflicted on the Palestinian environment.
The statement also highlighted the importance of the clear call contained in the two resolutions for states to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2234 and to distinguish between the territory of the State of Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. Egypt described this distinction as a fundamental pillar for preserving the two-state solution and preventing the entrenchment of the occupation or the imposition of illegal realities on the ground.
Egypt reaffirmed its full support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, stressing that it will continue its political and diplomatic efforts to end the Israeli occupation and enable the Palestinian people to exercise their inalienable rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
