The City of Tukwila is encouraging people to be ready to leave on short notice due to possible flash flooding.

TUKWILA, Wash. — A Flash Flood Warning expired after a levee breach on the Green River near Tukwila Monday. 

The flow of water at the site of the breach has been stopped and temporary repairs have been made, according to officials. King County Emergency Management lifted evacuation orders for residents and businesses east of the river in the Orillia area in Tukwila, Renton and Kent.

People in the area are advised to be prepared if conditions worsen.

A Flood Warning remains in place for Green River near Auburn and Cedar River at Renton.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the Flash Flood Warning at 11:51 a.m. Monday, saying that the Desimone Levee on the Green River failed. The National Weather Service added that the break happened along the east side of the Green River along South Todd Boulevard.

Warnings went out that Kent, Renton and Tukwila could experience flash flooding as a result of the levee breach.

Residents and businesses east of the Green River in the Orillia area in Tukwila, Renton, Kent were under a Level 3 (Go Now) evacuation notice, prior to the Flash Flood Warning expiring.

Emergency officials continue to warn people against walking or driving through standing or moving water, and advise everyone to respect barricades and road closures. 

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Seattle District are working with King County officials to assess damage and determine next steps.

The Washington National Guard posted on X that they were sending guard members to King County to support efforts. 

Betsy Robertson with the Red Cross told KING 5 people who are asked to evacuate should “be intentional” about following instructions and to “have a mind” for not creating further problems. 

Robertson said the geographic challenges presented by the flooding event were “undeniable.”Â
