One person is in hospital with life-threatening injuries and three others are recovering after police say a pickup truck hit a horse and buggy in the Township of Perth East Sunday afternoon.
Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say just before 4:30 p.m., police, paramedics, the Perth East Fire Department and Waterloo Regional Police Service responded to a collision on Perth Road 116 near Perth Line 72 near the village of Wellesley.
Police said a white pickup truck struck the horse and buggy, which had four passengers.
All passengers of the buggy were seriously injured and were taken to a local trauma centre. One of the passengers was later moved to another trauma centre by Ornge air ambulance for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
Police said the horse fled from the scene following the collision and did not appear to be injured.
“Perth East has a large population of people who use horses and buggies,” Const. Evan Polini told CBC News in a phone interview. “It’s not uncommon to see them traveling in that area.”
Perth Road 116 was temporarily closed for the investigation but has since been reopened.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing. Perth County OPP urges anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to call 1-888-310-1122 or contact Crime Stoppers.
