Under-fire Celtic boss Wilfried Nancy
Crestfallen Wilfried Nancy is fully aware of Celtic supporters’ escalating rage as he promised a fanbase on the brink his side are close to winning games.
That belief will be scant consolation after diehards vented their spleen at their luckless manager following Dundee United‘s comeback 2-1 win which made it four consecutive defeats for the champions – the worst run since the 1970s.
Celtic’s raging away fans let rip at the board on the day non-executive Peter Lawwell walked away over ‘intolerable abuse and threats’.
Then the same fans told Nancy to ‘get to f***’ during the Tannadice turnaround and at the final whistle.
But the 48-year-old, unbowed amid mounting anger, promised fans he can turn it around and reckons that first victory is around the corner.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I know they are upset. But we are close to winning games. At the moment, we are not able to do it.
“But the players are giving everything, we try to find solutions for it and we are having many situations to score goals. But we didn’t, we’re still working and after that we’ll see if we can have this win.”
“In terms of results it’s tough. But in terms of possibility to win games, we are there.
“We are on the right track, but this is not enough – I know that. We all want to win, but I’m confident because of the game we played and every time I see an improvement.”
Nancy rued the missed chances with goalscorer Daizen Maeda conjuring up the miss of the season as he cracked the post from one yard out and Johnny Kenny also missed a mammoth chance.
He added: “I could’ve said something different but today you saw we had many chances.
“You saw that all game that we had, except maybe in that moment, we didn’t concede many chances.
“At the moment, we are not able to score goals, we are going to work on that and hopefully reverse that.

“But it is not like we did not create. That’s why for me it’s a good way, but like I said we need to be stronger on set-pieces, second waves.
“We played forward, attacked the box, defended well, and that’s why it’s difficult to accept this result. I know it’s four losses in a row, that’s the first time this has happened for me too.
“I’m not proud of that, but today we deserved better.”
But Nancy, feeling the heat from punters while installing his complex 3-4-3, doubled down that the good times are on their way.
He said: “For sure, it’s difficult for the club and the players, the staff and myself. But again, it’s difficult for me to talk.
“We’ve lost four games in a row, but today we were close to winning the game. It’s the direction we have to keep going in, and we have to be stronger to avoid conceding these kinds of goals.”
