Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has apologised after her husband was caught drink driving, saying the incident left her “disappointed and embarrassed”.

Ms Allan said Yorick Piper was driving to the supermarket in Bendigo on Thursday morning when he rear-ended another car at an intersection.

He was pulled over and blew the blood alcohol concentration limit of 0.05.

Mr Piper received an on-the-spot fine and has lost his licence, which she said would take effect from January 16.

Ms Allan said she and her family had celebrated their son’s birthday at a local pub the night before and medication he was taking might have contributed to the incident.

“As a result of the medication mixing with the alcohol from the night before, he simply shouldn’t have been driving the following morning,” she said.

“He understands that, I understand that and for this we are both truly sorry.”

Ms Allan said she and her husband had made a donation of $1,000 to the Amber Community charity, which supports people affected by road trauma.

“Drink driving is an incredibly serious issue, so is road trauma. We recognise that and I am truly sorry,” she said.

“I was shocked when Yorick told me yesterday what had happened.”
