The very first section of Putin’s press conference was devoted to the war in
Ukraine and what he says are Russia’s military gains in the east of the country.

He has talked about them at length, focusing on the area of the Donetsk region that Russia is trying to
capture from Ukraine, and trumpeting his army’s alleged victories. “I’m sure
that by the end of this year we will witness new successes by our
fighters,” he says.

It’s true that Russia has made advances on the battlefield –
albeit at great cost of manpower and resources, and at a glacial pace.
But Putin is often hasty – and inaccurate – in celebrating Russia’s victories. It’s part of his attempts to try to persuade the world that Russia’s victory in Ukraine is inevitable.

As recently as last week, President Zelensky posted a video
of himself standing outside the town
Kupyansk to prove
that the Ukrainian troops were still holding it, despite Moscow’s claim it was captured.

Putin was asked about this specifically this morning. “He’s
an artist, and a talented one,” Putin says of
Zelensky. “We know this from his films from a past time.” (Zelensky was an
actor and a comedian before he was elected president of Ukraine in 2019.)

Putin cast doubts on Zelensky’s video, wondering whether it may have been filmed earlier. “People say [the landmark] looks different now,” he said.
