James Owen, the Shropshire councillor responsible for leisure, said: “The sad reality is that hiccups such as this will become more common across our stock due to the advanced age of many of our leisure facilities including the Quarry.”

But while he accepted it was frustrating to close the pool, he was pleased the source of the leak had been found.

He said the aim was to “reopen the pool as soon as we can”.

The Quarry pool was forced to close in July 2022 after panelling came loose and it took 17 months to carry out repairs and reopen it.

It was also closed for a period in 2020 after Storm Ciara.

Shropshire Council is aiming to build a new pool for the town at the Sundorne Sports Village, but has said it remains “committed to maintaining a separate community swimming facility within Shrewsbury town centre”.
