At just 18 years old, Summer McIntosh is making her case for the most dominant Canadian athlete of all time.

Taking part in the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this week, McIntosh picked up her third gold medal in as many events, winning the 200-metre butterfly with ease.

But after the race, McIntosh was letting out a pretty clear F-bomb, which might have confused the average viewer.

“Have you ever seen somebody so disappointed to win the world championships?! She’s stone cold.”

THIS is how close Summer McIntosh came to breaking a 16-year-old world record in the 200m butterfly 👀

The disappointment wasn’t with the medal but with a different accomplishment she was searching for: a world record in the event, for which she was 0.18 seconds behind the mark set in 2009 by China’s Liu Zig. The record, which was set while wearing a now-banned “supersuit,” has been one of the toughest in the sport to break, given that it has now stood for 16 years while many other records are continually falling.

“I think my reaction after the race shows how badly I wanted it,” said McIntosh after the race, per Toronto Star’s Bruce Arthur. “I apologize for that: it was not PG-13.”

At a time of 2:01.99, it was a personal best for McIntosh and one of the best-ever in the event, ahead of her 2:02.26 Canadian record that she’d set at this year’s Canadian trials in Victoria.

“But I think that just shows my mentality of always wanting more. And going into tonight I really wanted that world record. But, I mean, there’s a silver lining: it’s going to give me extra motivation, maybe into next season, and that’s a huge goal on my checklist that I will continue to chase.”

What’s next for McIntosh’s career?

If McIntosh decided to retire today, it would already be one heck of a career.

For now, she’s got individual events left in the 800 metre freestyle and 400 metre medley races, the latter for which she holds the world record.

McIntosh has already set five world records and won three Olympic gold medals and a bronze medal at the Paris Summer Games a year ago. She’ll likely be one of the biggest stars heading into the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, when she’ll be only 21 years old.

With Penny Oleksiak and Andre De Grasse currently being Canada’s most decorated Olympic athletes with seven career medals, it might just be a matter of time before McIntosh shatters that mark if she keeps up her current pace.

With the World Aquatics Championships happening every two years, the next major meet of her career will come in 2027 when they head to Budapest. She will, however, likely be at the World Short Course championships next year in Beijing, as well as a series of smaller meets along the way.
