A Winnipeg firefighter was taken to hospital on Friday evening, as crews responded to a fire at a south Winnipeg condo building.

At 5:41 p.m. on Friday, firefighters were called to a three-storey condo building on Allegheny Drive, near the University of Manitoba, the city said in a news release.

Crews were met with smoke and flames coming from the building when they arrived. The fire was declared under control just after 6 p.m., with most of the damage contained to the unit where the fire started, the city said.

A firefighter received medical assessment at the scene, according to the release. They were transported to hospital for further evaluation.

Temporarily displaced residents got support from the city’s emergency social services team, the release said.

The city said the fire may have been an accident, caused by an electrical failure.

Damage estimates are not available yet, the city said.
