After being knocked out in the sixth round of his boxing match against Anthony Joshua on Friday evening, Jake Paul had this to say about his “ass whooping.”
“…This sport has helped me so much in my life. I think my jaw is broken by the way,” Paul said as he spit blood onto the mat. “Yea, it’s definitely broke.”
“Man, that was good. Nice little ass whooping from one of the best to ever do it, so, I love this s–t, I’m gonna come back and get a world championship belt at some point.”
Paul did take some punishment in this one. Per CompuBox, Joshua landed on 48 of his 146 punches thrown (33 percent). The final combination was brutal, and Paul fell to the mat with a hard right hand from Joshua.
In addition, Joshua also won every round until the knockout, per the opinion of ESPN’s Andreas Hale, who had the fight 50-44 through five rounds.
Paul has almost always been on the winning end of his fights, reigning victorious in 12 of 14 professional matches with seven knockouts. However, Joshua is a two-time unified heavyweight champion and stood as Paul’s toughest competition to date. He was a heavy favorite going into this match, and that held true.
Paul did end up going six rounds, and combat sports journalist Ariel Helwani asked him whether he was surprised about that after the match.
“Honestly, I’m not surprised. I just got tired to be honest. There was just so much handling his weight. I think if I could of had better cardio, I think I could have kept it up and kept on fighting. But he did amazing, he hits really hard, and I just did my personal best.”
Both fighters showed their respect to one another, with Joshua doing the same in his post-fight interview.
Joshua also called out retired ex-champion Tyson Fury. The two have been rumored to fight in the past, but a match has not come to fruition. It’s clear Joshua would like to see that change. Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, told Sky Sports News earlier this month that his client would fight Joshua if it’s the “right deal” and that negotiations were happening.
