As part of preparing the new hymnbook, “Hymns for Home and Church,” Church leaders have thoughtfully reviewed lyrics to ensure sacred music teaches the doctrine of Christ with clarity and power. Some songs will receive updates to better reflect scriptural teachings and strengthen faith.

One example is the beloved children’s song “When I Am Baptized,” which was first published in the “Children’s Songbook” in 1989. In the new hymnbook, the song will be published with an update to its lyrics.

Primary General President Susan H. Porter shared the news on social media on December 20, 2025, expressing gratitude for lyrics that help children understand the covenant of baptism.

The updated song was released in the January issue of the “Friend,” a magazine for children published by the Church.

The second verse previously read, “I know when I am baptized, my wrongs are washed away, and I can be forgiven and improve myself each day.”

To better align with teachings found in scripture, the line was changed to read, “I know when I am baptized, I choose the Savior’s way. And I will be forgiven as I turn to Him each day.”

“We know when children choose to be baptized, they’re choosing to make a covenant with our Heavenly Father,” President Porter said. “The previous words referred to the water washing away their wrongs. Water does not wash away sin. It is a symbol.”

“[The Book of Mormon] clearly identifies the Savior as the cleansing power through the Holy Ghost to cleanse our hearts from sin,” said President Porter. “What a gift this is for children, once they’re baptized, to know that every day of their life they can joyfully repent. And their sins, it’ll be like they’re washed away through the blessing of the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ.”

Changes to other familiar hymns in the hymnbook will similarly focus on improving doctrinal clarity. Updates will also be introduced to replace culturally outdated words and phrases. Music changes will also be common in the new hymnbook to make the hymns easier to sing or accompany.
