The province has issued a travel advisory for a stretch of Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt —on the Coquihalla Highway — due to heavy snowfall and high winds.

Drive B.C. warns drivers to expect major delays and advises travellers to consider an alternate route through Highway 1.

It says power to facilities and charging stations along the more than 100-km stretch may be unavailable.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning in the area, noting it could see between 20 and 30 cm of snow Friday and between 10 to 15 cm on Saturday.

It warns travel will be challenging and visibility may be reduced.

Winter tires or chains are required on many B.C. highways between Oct. 1 and April 30, including the Coquihalla.

Just south of Hope, a 46-km stretch of Highway 3 has been closed for over a week following a series of atmospheric rivers.

The province announced Friday it will remain closed for several weeks as repairs are done to the damage, which it says has occurred at 30 separate locations along the route.
